Apple AirTags: What are they and how do they work?

Apple has come a long way since it was just a computer company, producing products and services far beyond its initial computing origins.

Over time, Apple has diversified into other areas of consumer electronics and technology, including the development of the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, as well as services such as the App Store and Apple Music.

Today, Apple is widely recognised as a leader in technology and design, and its products and services have a global following.

The company's commitment to innovation, user experience, and privacy has helped it maintain its position as one of the world's most valuable and influential technology companies.

In April 2021, Apple released portable trackers that have since become a game changer in the world of personal item tracking and organisation.

The AirTag is part of Apple's larger efforts to expand its ecosystem of products and services, and to offer consumers more convenient and user-friendly solutions for everyday problems.

Here's everything you need to know about the AirTag:

What's an AirTag?

AirTags are small, round, coin-shaped tracking devices. AirTags are a convenient and easy-to-use tool for keeping track of your belongings. AirTag contains a built-in chip that uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with other devices.

The AirTag is water-resistant, but it is not water-proof. This means that it can withstand brief exposure to water, but it should not be submerged in water for extended periods of time. The AirTags are a must-have for anyone who wants to keep track of their things.

The AirTag is designed to be small, discreet, and versatile. It measures at a diameter of 1.26 inches and a thickness of only 0.31 inches (or 8mm) - making it lightweight yet powerful and weighing just 0.39 ounces (11 grams).

It can be attached to any item that you want to keep track of, such as keys, cameras, wallets, bags, pets, bicycles, and then located using the "Find My" app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Just make sure that the AirTag is securely attached to the item and is not covered by any metal or other materials that can interfere with its signal. AirTag uses Bluetooth technology to communicate its location to nearby Apple devices and can be located on a map even when offline.

The device is also equipped with a built-in speaker that can play a sound to help you locate it. The AirTag’s built-in battery lasts for a year, and because they are water-resistant, they can be used in any weather conditions.

The AirTags are also privacy-conscious, as they use end-to-end encryption to keep your location data private and secure. You can also set up notifications on your Apple device to alert you when an AirTag arrives or leaves a certain location, making it easier to track your belongings.

How do they work?

Setting up an AirTag is simple and straightforward. Attach the AirTag to the item you want to keep track of. Turn on your Apple device and open the Find My app. Tap the "Devices" tab and then tap the "+" button to add a new device.

Hold the AirTag close to your Apple device and wait for it to appear in the Find My app. Give the AirTag a name, such as "Keys" or "Wallet". Once the AirTag is set up, you can locate it by using the Find My app on your Apple device.

If the AirTag is within range of an Apple device that is signed in to iCloud, you can see its current location and track its movements on a map. If you lose your item with the AirTag attached, you can use the Find My app to play a sound from the AirTag to help you locate it.

You can also set up notifications on your Apple device to alert you when an AirTag arrives or leaves a certain location, making it easier to track your belongings.

Here is a list of the compatible devices:

  • -iPhone SE, 6S or later
  • -iPod Touch 7th generation or later
  • -iPad Mini 4
  • -iPad Pro, 5th generation or later
  • -iPad Air 2 or later

Note: The AirTag requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.5 or later to set up and use.

Additionally, the AirTag's seamless integration with other Apple products and services has made it a desirable accessory for Apple users.

How far can Apple AirTag track?

The range of an AirTag is dependent on which tracking method you use. From short-range Bluetooth tracking to ultra-wideband, the possibilities are endless!

Utilising Bluetooth connections, an AirTag can be set up with an iPhone within a range of 33 feet. Apple affirmed this is the maximum range for successful Bluetooth connections between devices.

AirTags have an impressive max range for a Bluetooth connection - 10 metres. Although, depending on the situation around you, it is possible that the operating distance may be lower. It's important to keep this in mind!

In this case, the tracking range may be limited by several factors, including the density of Apple devices in the area, the strength of the AirTag's signal, and environmental factors such as buildings and obstacles.

However, some users might get a better result in terms of distance, based on the item, position, and line of sight they have.

Do AirTags need to be charged?

Apple AirTags do not need to be charged. They are powered by a built-in, non-replaceable battery that is designed to last for several years. When the battery begins to run low, you will receive a notification on your iPhone and can purchase a replacement AirTag from Apple.

AirTag batteries not only last longer, but their life also depends on how much you use them. For instance, when you're still setting up the AirTag and playing sound to find its whereabouts, the battery might run out faster.

To check the current battery level of an Apple AirTag, follow these steps:

  • 1.Open the "Find My" app on your iPhone.
  • 2.Tap on the "Devices" tab at the bottom of the screen.
  • 3.Select the AirTag that you want to check the battery level of.
  • 4.The battery level will be displayed next to the AirTag's name.

Note that the battery level is not constantly updated, and may not be displayed if the AirTag is outside of range of any nearby Apple devices.

In such cases, the battery level will be updated the next time the AirTag comes within range of an Apple device running the "Find My" app.

Where to buy them?

The Apple AirTag is available in many countries around the world. You can purchase the AirTag online through the Apple website or through authorised resellers and retailers.

You can also buy the AirTag at Apple Stores and other physical retail locations in supported countries. Availability may vary depending on the country and region, so it's best to check the Apple website for more information on availability in your area.

And with Apple's engraving service, you can personalise one side of the AirTag for free. Apple will engrave one side of your AirTag for free after you purchase. On the order screen, you can pick from letters, numbers (0-50), and choices of 31 different emojis.

With the small size of the tag, you can get a maximum of four characters engraved on its back. As you select your desired emojis, letters, and numbers, you'll be able to instantly preview what it will look like! Isn't that amazing?
